About Us

Who We Are

Virginia Beach Christian Academy

Robert and Kimberly Thorp embarked on this journey by teaching preschoolers in their homes in 1975. In 1989, they opened their first Christian academy, and then, in 1991 they answered God’s call to start a home missions church in Virginia Beach, VA. At that point, Virginia Beach Christian Academy was born as a ministry of the United Pentecostal Church of Virginia Beach.

In 2013, the Thorps felt it was time for them to retire from the pastorate. Sis. Thorp’s health had begun to deteriorate as the result of a severe car accident several years earlier. They believed the Lord was leading them into a new season of their lives. Although VBCA remained open, the majority of families shifted to homeschooling their children. So, at this point, the focus split between assisting homeschooled families as they accepted the challenge of teaching their own children and serving a limited number of school students. Because she could work from her recliner at home, it was a win-win all around. VBCA would provide curriculum, monitor progress, score the more difficult projects, and tutor when the parents needed help in meeting their children’s needs. For the homeschool families, the responsibility for teaching fell to the parents, but they were never alone. Working side by side, we established a method of team teaching from home that works. Eventually, her health began to improve and more face-to-face students registered. Being able to serve both the school and homeschool community has blessed many families throughout the years and God receives all the glory for taking what felt like something life shattering and using it to bless families locally and all over the world.

Although the car accident was a life-changing event, it triggered a series of events that resulted in the opportunity to reach the needs of more families than we could have ever reached in our onsite academy. God has an amazing plan – one that we may not have ever realized on our own. His plans are ALWAYS better than anything we could imagine!

Our Mission
Virginia Beach Christian Academy is dedicated to serving our Christian academy families and to assist our homeschool parents in training their children to be faithful Christians, spiritually strong, academically equipped, motivated by a Biblical Worldview, and witnesses for the Lord, Jesus Christ.

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth"

Rev. Robert Thorp
Pastor Thorp is an ordained minister with the United Pentecostal Church. He served in the US Navy for over twenty years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He drove a special needs bus for many years while pastoring, which offered him the opportunity to be onsite during most of the school day while the Christian academy operated through the ministry of the church. He majored in technology education, teaching STEM classes at the local homeschool co-op. He has a bachelor's degree in theology and is currently working in his masters program.

Director - Teacher
Dr. Thorp is a minister with the United Pentecostal Church. With a degree in psychology and a doctorate in education - leadership and administration, Dr. Thorp blended these concentrations to develop a philosophy of individualized one-on-one instruction that is based on the abilities of each student and mastery of each concept. Working with children and their parents for many years has afforded opportunities to bless families through academics, parenting seminars, Bible studies, and curriculum development. Publishing her book "Kids DO Come With Instructions" has also been a blessing to many.
Amanda Johnson image

Amanda Johnson

Assistant Director - Teacher
Amanda graduated from Virginia Beach Christian Academy. She is the mother of seven children who are all schooled through VBCA. Amanda taught in the academy when it was still an onsite school, but made the transition to homeschooling with ease. She has been homeschooling for the past fourteen years. Although she is proficient in all areas of our system, she has specialized in working with younger children and those who need creative learning methods to master concepts. The Johnson's love country living and include Bible Quizzing as part of their school day. We are thankful to have Amanda serving our families.
Abigail Brashear image

Abigail Brashear

Teacher - Reading Specialist
Abigail graduated from Virginia Beach Christian Academy and taught kindergarten and first grade when the academy was an onsite school. She is the mother of five children - three who have already graduated from VBCA. The other two are still being homeschooled with us. Although Abbie is able to serve all of our children, her burden leads her to work with those K-4 Preschool, kindergarten, and first grade families. She understands that this exciting time of their lives - this time of learning and loving to read - is the basis for a successful education. Abbie and her husband, Tex, are both called to minister through the children's ministry at their church and teach a Wednesday night Christian education class each week. The Brashear's also participate in the Bible Quizzing ministry.
Victoria Francis image

Victoria Francis

Teacher - English Concentration
Tori also graduated from VBCA as a homeschool student and has her bachelor's degree in English from Liberty University. Although Tori works with all students, her primary focus is to assist our students in learning to write excellent essays, research papers, and speeches. Teaching them to use credible sources, citing them properly using MLA formatting, and creating papers that are organized and flow well is of utmost importance. The ability to write well is often the key to college scholarships and career opportunities. Tori has a unique ability to write extremely well and she imparts that to her students. Tori serves her church as a Bible Quiz coach for the senior division.
why vbca

Why Us?

Virginia Beach Christian Academy is dedicated to helping you and your family through the entire academic process - whether as enrollees in Virginia Beach Christian Academy or in our home school division. Below are just a few things we offer.
STATE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
For those homeschool families In Virginia, that means helping you file your Notice of Intent Form. It also means year-end proof of progress. Most students will complete the Iowa Test of Basic Skills online or an evaluation completed by a qualified evaluator. Students living in other states will have the benefit of our research and years of experience to ensure that you are within the legal parameters of your state. Academy students are enrolled in a private school. These children will also complete the ITBS, although they are not required to submit scores to the state.
CUTTING EDGE CURRICULUM
Students enrolled in both of our programs will be assigned Alpha Omega Curriculum based on the results of the initial diagnostic assessment. This course of study is provided via the internet for grades 3-12. Children use audio, visual and tactile learning styles when working with computer instruction. K-2nd graders use consumable paper curriculum. Students using AOP curriculum, who have completed the work correctly and remained on task, consistently achieve the highest scores in national standardized testing and SATs. In our program, students do not move forward until they have proven mastery of the concepts assigned to them.
RECORDS, REPORT CARDS, AND TRANSCRIPTS
These records are provided by Virginia Beach Christian Academy and are maintained by the academy. Diplomas for homeschool students are signed by the parent and co-signed by the pastor and principal. These documents are listed under the name you choose for your homeschool. When your child graduates, diplomas are issued in the name of the homeschool and signed by the parents.  Those students registered in the academy will receive diplomas issued in the name of VBCA signed by the pastor and principal of the school.
MONITOR PROGRESS
Weekly assessments are provided, whether you are homeschooling or in the academy. These reports will alert you to successes and problems that have occurred during the previous week. Obviously, if something pops up prior to the weekly report, you will be contacted immediately. We understand that since you will be "checking out" your child at the end of each day you are already aware of his progress and any issues he may be having. However, we also know that quite often students who know their assessments will arrive in the morning will suddenly find the motivation to complete the project they have been neglecting.
TRUE APOSTOLIC BIBLE CURRICULUM
Although Alpha Omega is created by a company founded on Baptist principles, the curriculum is easily taught from an Apostolic viewpoint. However, once your child reaches grade three, families have options for their Bible course. Some families prefer the computer and the opportunity for their children to see what other faiths are teaching, then discussing these differences and bouncing them off Scripture as a family. Others prefer a truly Apostolic Bible Curriculum. This curriculum is provided in “hard copy” only and is not part of the computerized curriculum. Parents will download the pdf. Students can either read online and answer the questions in a notebook, or parents can print and they do all of it on paper. The parents score and send the results to us for documentation. The third option is available for those families who participate in Bible Quizzing. Typically, these children will memorize anywhere from 200 - 500 verses per year - word perfect (depending on their ages). Quizzers who stay current with their memory work and review are required to submit an essay at the end of each week listing the verse of the week that had the most impact on them and how it guides their lives. All three options are available.
ID CARDS
Student ID cards are provided for our students and teacher IDs are provided for our staff and homeschool parents. The ID cards provide verification that the child is homeschooled and can be used for discounts to some museums, sites of interest, etc. Teacher discounts are available at many of the craft and teacher supply stores.
ACCOUNTABILITY
“Every pastor needs a pastor”. It doesn’t matter who we are or what we do in life, we all answer to someone. Often, parents say one of the most difficult aspects of homeschooling Is disciplining themselves and their children to simply do what they need to do every day. Knowing that we are monitoring progress and helping you stay on track, helps many families enjoy the flexibility of homeschooling yet maintain the discipline necessary to continue making forward progress.

The weekly assessment will help us move at a pace that is consistent with the child's abilities, mastery of concepts, and remain focused on those short and long term goals.
GRADING ESSAYS, PROJECTS, AND REPORTS
In both programs, our staff will work to not only grade, but review and comment on your child’s work making sure that clear explanations of MLA formatting is provided in keeping with the grade level of your child. Year-end testing, SATs, and college placement tests rely heavily on the ability to write well. In the beginning, children do not lose points for mechanical errors, MLA issues, etc. However, if after comments have been made and instruction given, a child continues to make the same errors, points are deducted (with explanation) to help the child realize that these issues matter. Writing well is required for many careers - whether the student is college bound or not. This is a benefit of our program that most parents value greatly. No one wants to argue with their child over a comma.
TUTORING/INSTRUCTION
Tutoring is offered on a one on one basis. Students who are not enrolled in our academy (online or via homeschool services) will begin with a diagnostic in the applicable subject. Once we have the results of this assessment, a course will be created specifically for that child. Tutoring will take place online and one on one. Mastery is required before moving on to each new assingment. A minimum score of 80% is requried on all quizzes and tests. Our enrolled VBCA students who use our complete system will first reach out to their own parent if they have questions. However, there are times when they need to hear a "different voice". We may say exactly the same thing, but a different voice speaks and the child gets it. The only thing we can think of is that we didn't just tell him to go make his bed. Since he doesn't hear us all the time, when he does - something clicks. The other benefit is math help. Most parents have not used their algebra or geometry formally since they finished school. You often use it in daily living, but haven't played with parabolas in a very long time. Consequently, even with the answer key available, it is difficult for you to explain. Solution: text the instructor and ask for help. FaceTime and a white board allows us to teach one-on-one, face-to-face. Often, a VBCA student will be assigned a specific time each day to receive math help. Normally, this occurs when they begin upper level math. Some don't need it. Others find it makes things more understandable. We will do all in our power to work with your children, providing the assistance they need, yet still teaching them to become independent life-long learners.
GUIDANCE, WISDOM, AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
At times, you just need someone to help you lay out a plan to meet graduation requirements, help motivate you or your child, toss out a few ideas for maintaining your sanity, and offer suggestions for different learning challenges. You may also need help with information regarding colleges, scholarships, grants, etc. Truly, there is not much that we haven’t addressed in past years and our desire is to serve you, whether you are homeschooling your child or are registered in the academy, we will do our best to provide the guidance you need.

ELIGIBILITY
Kindergarten students must be five years of age by September 30, to be considered for the kindergarten program. A reading readiness assessment will be given. Often children who have not completed a strong K-4 program will struggle through kindergarten. We want your child's first experience with school to be amazing. In the event that your child is not ready to read, we will do all we can to serve your family by ordering curriculum at his level and helping you navigate through it. We do not enroll the children until they are in kindergarten.

Our System

The System for Our Homeschool Families

INSTRUCTION BY THE PARENTS USING OUR SERVICES ANYWHERE THERE IS AN INTERNET CONNECTION

Virginia Beach Christian Academy homeschool division provides an amazing curriculum that is one of the most highly rated in the country. Parents who use this material, faithfully completing all of the required lessons in accordance with the instructions will normally see excellent results. Academics in a homeschool should be better than what our children can receive anywhere else – certainly not inferior. So your choice of curriculum is one of the most important decisions you can make.

Children in Kindergarten through grade two will receive their curriculum in paper and pencil format. You will have teacher’s manuals and will be able to follow them when setting up your child’s lessons for the day. ALL children in kindergarten and first grade will learn by parent led instruction. It’s very hands on and very parent intensive instruction. Grade two is less so. By then your little one should be able to read the directions and do the course work with much less help from you. Oh, he’ll still need to read to you and will still need help but it’s much less than before.

Children are learning to read in their early grades. Then they begin to read to learn. One of the most important aspects of the Alpha Omega curriculum is that it teaches our children to be life-long learners. By third grade, your scholars will be diving in to discover the answers to the questions themselves. No, it’s not a cake walk. It’s still a lot of work but you are no longer trying to teach five different courses to each child every day. They log in, see the goals that are already set for them, then begin to work. They ask if they have questions or get stuck. The computer does the scoring except when the questions are “fill in the blank” or essays.

In addition to an excellent curriculum, our families receive the following services:

Accountability – your children are accountable to you/you are accountable to yourselves, but we help you monitor progress in such a way that you are aware of the need to proceed at a consistent pace.

Since this is often the first thing parents mention when contacting us, we list it first. Clearly, we can’t make you stay on track but knowing that someone else can see what the child is doing, how long he works each day in which subjects, whether or not he did anything today or took a day off – for the third time this week, all work together to help families stay focused and get the work done. We understand taking a day off. We understand family emergencies. We get that part of homeschooling is the freedom to just go to the zoo today. But, we also understand that too many of those days interfere with completing the required materials and that having a bit of accountability really helps.

Text messaging to alert you if your child has fallen behind

We know. You will already know this because you are checking your child’s work at the end of the day. However, sometimes being able to tell your child that you received a text from the school carries a bit of clout. Reminding your child that they need to ask for help if they need it or complete their work on time is a bit easier with a back up.

Grading essays and helping with the tough questions

You will find that you will be able to successfully assist your child most of the time. After all, you have the score key. However, we understand that there are times that grading a lengthy essay or that algebra II question has you stumped and you need a bit of help. We are here for you.

Local families attending Co-op will have all co-op fees waived if they are registered for our system.

Families who register with VBCA Homeschool Division will receive their curriculum and all of our services for a total of $1,200 per year. This can be paid in full, over a period of either ten, eleven, or twelve months.

VIRGINIA BEACH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Expectations

Each student registered in this academy’s program accepts specific responsibilities in order to meet the objectives necessary to receive an excellent education.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS
  • To endeavor to grow daily in your walk with God by reading the Bible, praying, and applying Scripture to your life
  • To choose to develop Christian character by applying Biblical principles to situations and decisions
  • To be thankful to your parents for the sacrifices made in order for you to participate in this learning experience.
  • To recognize the authority of your parents and the VBCA staff, showing respect, honor, and obedience
  • To work diligently each day to complete all academic goals
  • To faithfully complete all assignments to the best of your ability. Do not skip questions or assignments; Do not submit inferior quality work. Do your best
  • To study for the appropriate time periods each evening
  • To complete all projects, essays, and experiments on time
  • To abide by the No Griping policy. Choose joy.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS
  • Homeschool parents are expected to protect your family by complying with the laws of your state regarding Homeschool education. VA families should file your Notice of Intent to homeschool. A copy of the form will be included in your registration packet. Using the first option requiring a diploma and list of subjects is the easiest. Simply be sure to include a copy of your high school diploma and list the courses of study for each child. Then, just submit the year-end composite scores (this is the Math and Language Arts core section) or the evaluation as proof of progress. Academy students are not required to submit the notice of intent. However, academy students also complete the standardized test at the end of the year. This information is for our use and is not submitted as proof of progress. This is not required for academy students.
  • To provide a Christian environment at home – including a family altar and Biblical instruction for living.
  • To take your child to church a minimum of one day each week.
  • For children in grade 3 or above: To provide a computer or tablet of sufficient quality to access the internet, then access the student’s schoolwork at the academy. The computer provides the better option.
  • To provide a quiet place for study and require study time in each subject beyond the time necessary to complete daily goals (five minutes for levels 1-3; ten minutes for levels 4-7; fifteen minutes for levels 8-12).
  • To require your child to sit down and do his daily required goals and assignments. We understand there are times that our homeschool students have something special taking place and that may mean working ahead or catching up a bit after the event in order to remain on track. If this will mean more than a couple of days delay, please text me so I am able to help formulate a plan or assist if needed. Academy students follow the assigned schedule.
  • To go behind your child EVERY day – no matter how old he/she is – to ascertain that all subjects are current and completed to appropriate standards. Please do not assume that since your child is in high school, he doesn’t need you to follow up each day. We all need to answer to a higher authority and he needs to know you are going to check his progress. Academy staff will frequently monitor progress, score when asked, and provide a weekly assessment.
  • Help your child when he faces difficult questions or needs assistance.
  • Score all items that require hand grading using the required criteria. For example, if a report is to be 750 words, be sure your child has written approximately 750 words. Anything less will require a rewrite. Ignitia Writer will assist those using this program. Also, Wikipedia is NOT a legitimate source and your children should be encouraged to choose a more substantiated source. Please remind your child that the majority of words should be his own interpretation and anything quoted or taken from another individual needs to be cited. Teaching this when the children are young is easier than fixing the “copy/paste syndrome” when they are older. However, staff is always available to provide grading, feedback and instruction for these projects.
  • To require that all assigned projects, reports and essays are completed in a timely manner and must be submitted prior to testing out on the final exam.
  • To encourage your child to read by abiding by the following: All students should learn to read for pleasure. Children in K-4 are to read and keep a daily journal showing comprehension. Kindergarten and first grade students read to you and you read to them. They tell you what they want to say in their journal and draw a picture of what they read. Students in grades 5-8 should complete one book report each month.
  • Parents of students who are using paper product for their goals and participate in the co-op located in Tidewater, are required bring student books to co-op sessions so there is a weekly check point for completed work. Those families who do not participate in co-op are to forward an email to the administrator weekly that includes the pages completed each week in each subject that is not on the computer. Families who live too far away to participate in the Co-op meetings are to provide for PE activities equal to 1 ½ hours each week. Art and music activities through grade nine.
  • To teach your child to reach for “Excellence: Never mediocrity”
  • In the event that you have been given the opportunity to make monthly installments, all payments are due by the first of the month or by the agreed upon in advance, due dates. The accounting program used by VBCA provides recurring invoices and auto-payments from the family’s debit/credit card on the due dates.
  • To support the policies of this provider as we strive to assist you in training your child whether as a homeschool family or enrolled in the academy.
  • Homeschool students in Virginia will be required to complete year end testing, to remain in compliance with VA law. Parents will schedule and pay for test materials for the online Iowa Test of Basic Skills or for an evaluation. Academy students will also take the ITBS. However, scores are not required to be submitted for academy students. This information is for our use in verifying placement, master, the need for review, etc. All test results are to be forwarded to VBCA for inclusion in the permanent record.
