About Us
Who We Are
Virginia Beach Christian Academy
Robert and Kimberly Thorp embarked on this journey by teaching preschoolers in their homes in 1975. In 1989, they opened their first Christian academy, and then, in 1991 they answered God’s call to start a home missions church in Virginia Beach, VA. At that point, Virginia Beach Christian Academy was born as a ministry of the United Pentecostal Church of Virginia Beach.
In 2013, the Thorps felt it was time for them to retire from the pastorate. Sis. Thorp’s health had begun to deteriorate as the result of a severe car accident several years earlier. They believed the Lord was leading them into a new season of their lives. Although VBCA remained open, the majority of families shifted to homeschooling their children. So, at this point, the focus split between assisting homeschooled families as they accepted the challenge of teaching their own children and serving a limited number of school students. Because she could work from her recliner at home, it was a win-win all around. VBCA would provide curriculum, monitor progress, score the more difficult projects, and tutor when the parents needed help in meeting their children’s needs. For the homeschool families, the responsibility for teaching fell to the parents, but they were never alone. Working side by side, we established a method of team teaching from home that works. Eventually, her health began to improve and more face-to-face students registered. Being able to serve both the school and homeschool community has blessed many families throughout the years and God receives all the glory for taking what felt like something life shattering and using it to bless families locally and all over the world.
Although the car accident was a life-changing event, it triggered a series of events that resulted in the opportunity to reach the needs of more families than we could have ever reached in our onsite academy. God has an amazing plan – one that we may not have ever realized on our own. His plans are ALWAYS better than anything we could imagine!

Our System
The System for Our Homeschool Families
INSTRUCTION BY THE PARENTS USING OUR SERVICES ANYWHERE THERE IS AN INTERNET CONNECTION
Virginia Beach Christian Academy homeschool division provides an amazing curriculum that is one of the most highly rated in the country. Parents who use this material, faithfully completing all of the required lessons in accordance with the instructions will normally see excellent results. Academics in a homeschool should be better than what our children can receive anywhere else – certainly not inferior. So your choice of curriculum is one of the most important decisions you can make.
Children in Kindergarten through grade two will receive their curriculum in paper and pencil format. You will have teacher’s manuals and will be able to follow them when setting up your child’s lessons for the day. ALL children in kindergarten and first grade will learn by parent led instruction. It’s very hands on and very parent intensive instruction. Grade two is less so. By then your little one should be able to read the directions and do the course work with much less help from you. Oh, he’ll still need to read to you and will still need help but it’s much less than before.
Children are learning to read in their early grades. Then they begin to read to learn. One of the most important aspects of the Alpha Omega curriculum is that it teaches our children to be life-long learners. By third grade, your scholars will be diving in to discover the answers to the questions themselves. No, it’s not a cake walk. It’s still a lot of work but you are no longer trying to teach five different courses to each child every day. They log in, see the goals that are already set for them, then begin to work. They ask if they have questions or get stuck. The computer does the scoring except when the questions are “fill in the blank” or essays.
In addition to an excellent curriculum, our families receive the following services:
Accountability – your children are accountable to you/you are accountable to yourselves, but we help you monitor progress in such a way that you are aware of the need to proceed at a consistent pace.
Since this is often the first thing parents mention when contacting us, we list it first. Clearly, we can’t make you stay on track but knowing that someone else can see what the child is doing, how long he works each day in which subjects, whether or not he did anything today or took a day off – for the third time this week, all work together to help families stay focused and get the work done. We understand taking a day off. We understand family emergencies. We get that part of homeschooling is the freedom to just go to the zoo today. But, we also understand that too many of those days interfere with completing the required materials and that having a bit of accountability really helps.

Text messaging to alert you if your child has fallen behind
We know. You will already know this because you are checking your child’s work at the end of the day. However, sometimes being able to tell your child that you received a text from the school carries a bit of clout. Reminding your child that they need to ask for help if they need it or complete their work on time is a bit easier with a back up.

Grading essays and helping with the tough questions
You will find that you will be able to successfully assist your child most of the time. After all, you have the score key. However, we understand that there are times that grading a lengthy essay or that algebra II question has you stumped and you need a bit of help. We are here for you.
Local families attending Co-op will have all co-op fees waived if they are registered for our system.
Families who register with VBCA Homeschool Division will receive their curriculum and all of our services for a total of $1,200 per year. This can be paid in full, over a period of either ten, eleven, or twelve months.
VIRGINIA BEACH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
Expectations
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS
- To endeavor to grow daily in your walk with God by reading the Bible, praying, and applying Scripture to your life
- To choose to develop Christian character by applying Biblical principles to situations and decisions
- To be thankful to your parents for the sacrifices made in order for you to participate in this learning experience.
- To recognize the authority of your parents and the VBCA staff, showing respect, honor, and obedience
- To work diligently each day to complete all academic goals
- To faithfully complete all assignments to the best of your ability. Do not skip questions or assignments; Do not submit inferior quality work. Do your best
- To study for the appropriate time periods each evening
- To complete all projects, essays, and experiments on time
- To abide by the No Griping policy. Choose joy.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS
- Homeschool parents are expected to protect your family by complying with the laws of your state regarding Homeschool education. VA families should file your Notice of Intent to homeschool. A copy of the form will be included in your registration packet. Using the first option requiring a diploma and list of subjects is the easiest. Simply be sure to include a copy of your high school diploma and list the courses of study for each child. Then, just submit the year-end composite scores (this is the Math and Language Arts core section) or the evaluation as proof of progress. Academy students are not required to submit the notice of intent. However, academy students also complete the standardized test at the end of the year. This information is for our use and is not submitted as proof of progress. This is not required for academy students.
- To provide a Christian environment at home – including a family altar and Biblical instruction for living.
- To take your child to church a minimum of one day each week.
- For children in grade 3 or above: To provide a computer or tablet of sufficient quality to access the internet, then access the student’s schoolwork at the academy. The computer provides the better option.
- To provide a quiet place for study and require study time in each subject beyond the time necessary to complete daily goals (five minutes for levels 1-3; ten minutes for levels 4-7; fifteen minutes for levels 8-12).
- To require your child to sit down and do his daily required goals and assignments. We understand there are times that our homeschool students have something special taking place and that may mean working ahead or catching up a bit after the event in order to remain on track. If this will mean more than a couple of days delay, please text me so I am able to help formulate a plan or assist if needed. Academy students follow the assigned schedule.
- To go behind your child EVERY day – no matter how old he/she is – to ascertain that all subjects are current and completed to appropriate standards. Please do not assume that since your child is in high school, he doesn’t need you to follow up each day. We all need to answer to a higher authority and he needs to know you are going to check his progress. Academy staff will frequently monitor progress, score when asked, and provide a weekly assessment.
- Help your child when he faces difficult questions or needs assistance.
- Score all items that require hand grading using the required criteria. For example, if a report is to be 750 words, be sure your child has written approximately 750 words. Anything less will require a rewrite. Ignitia Writer will assist those using this program. Also, Wikipedia is NOT a legitimate source and your children should be encouraged to choose a more substantiated source. Please remind your child that the majority of words should be his own interpretation and anything quoted or taken from another individual needs to be cited. Teaching this when the children are young is easier than fixing the “copy/paste syndrome” when they are older. However, staff is always available to provide grading, feedback and instruction for these projects.
- To require that all assigned projects, reports and essays are completed in a timely manner and must be submitted prior to testing out on the final exam.
- To encourage your child to read by abiding by the following: All students should learn to read for pleasure. Children in K-4 are to read and keep a daily journal showing comprehension. Kindergarten and first grade students read to you and you read to them. They tell you what they want to say in their journal and draw a picture of what they read. Students in grades 5-8 should complete one book report each month.
- Parents of students who are using paper product for their goals and participate in the co-op located in Tidewater, are required bring student books to co-op sessions so there is a weekly check point for completed work. Those families who do not participate in co-op are to forward an email to the administrator weekly that includes the pages completed each week in each subject that is not on the computer. Families who live too far away to participate in the Co-op meetings are to provide for PE activities equal to 1 ½ hours each week. Art and music activities through grade nine.
- To teach your child to reach for “Excellence: Never mediocrity”
- In the event that you have been given the opportunity to make monthly installments, all payments are due by the first of the month or by the agreed upon in advance, due dates. The accounting program used by VBCA provides recurring invoices and auto-payments from the family’s debit/credit card on the due dates.
- To support the policies of this provider as we strive to assist you in training your child whether as a homeschool family or enrolled in the academy.
- Homeschool students in Virginia will be required to complete year end testing, to remain in compliance with VA law. Parents will schedule and pay for test materials for the online Iowa Test of Basic Skills or for an evaluation. Academy students will also take the ITBS. However, scores are not required to be submitted for academy students. This information is for our use in verifying placement, master, the need for review, etc. All test results are to be forwarded to VBCA for inclusion in the permanent record.
